Minnesota Lemon Law

On the whole, Minnesota’s Lemon Law is favorable to the consumer. If the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days; if the vehicle needs to be repaired four times in the first two years after purchase; and if the problem prevents you from safely using the car, you are entitled to a full refund.

Iowa Lemon Law

Iowa’s law is equally favorable to the consumer. Lemon Law states that if a consumer has too many problems with their car within the first year of purchase, they are entitled to either a replacement or a full reimbursement. Specifically, Iowa’s Lemon Law gives you the right to a refund if:

  • Your car needs at least four repairs for the same defect within the first year.
  • Your car spends at least 20 days out of service within the first year.
  • A defect that you tried to get repaired was not successfully fixed within the first year.

If you make a valid Lemon Law claim to the manufacturer or dealer under these guidelines, they have 30 days to give you the refund or replacement you deserve. If they refuse, you can sue to recover attorneys’ fees plus up to three times the price you paid for your vehicle.

For used cars or for a new car that you purchased that is more than one year old, you have to rely on the dealer’s or manufacturer’s warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that warranties must be honored and must not be deceptive.
